Recently the Ark City cheerleaders traveled to Topeka to compete in their first competition sponsored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA).
Their day started out at 5:30 am. About an hour out, they started getting ready before they got to the competition location. The cheerleaders competed in the 5A division. and according to Ark City cheerleader Reba Hiatt-White she said, “It looked like we were the smallest team competing in that division,” said cheerleader Reba Hiatt-White. “The other squads have about 20-30 girls, while we had 15 which was a disadvantage to begin with.”
However, the team did not let that intimidate them and they made sure they were prepared by taking advantage of their three practice times before heading out to the floor.
Even though the Ark City cheerleaders gave it their all, they fell short making it to the finals.
Coach Lauren Rosales feels that her girls did very well for their first competition. She stated that their highest score was in the crowd leading component. She and the team feels like this was a great learning experience and now they know where they need to make improvements. The team doesn’t plan on doing any competitions soon but would like to go back to this competition next year.
