History and romance lovers alike will be entirely pleased by the musical that came rolling into Arkansas City High School this year: “Bonnie & Clyde.”
The well-known musical starred junior student, Esmeralda Castillo, as Bonnie, and sophomore student, Zane Butler, as Clyde. The world premiere of the original musical took place in November 2009, but directors Karissa Hoag and Andrea Berthot brought it to life right here in our small town on November 9th through 11th.
Not many know the story of Bonnie and Clyde, the real-life fugitives running from the law after a daring prison escape. As sad and heart-wrenching the actual events were, the choir students at ACHS really brought it to life. Many of the students revealed advanced acting skills and did a wonderful job of portraying the emotions of the characters.
Bonnie Parker, a young woman with a dream to be famous, one day meets Clyde Barrow, who wants to live up to his idols: Al Capone and Billy the Kid. They meet after Clyde and his brother Buck escape from jail, while Bonnie has a flat tire and Clyde is running from the law. Clyde offers to help her if she gives him a ride to West Dallas.
The rest of the musical follows in quick succession in a way that shows their fast-paced lifestyle, as well as how quickly they fell in love.
If you missed the show, it isn’t too late to still see it. Talk to Mrs. Berthot if you are interested in purchasing a DVD recording of the show. It will be worth both your time and money.
